5 unique brunch spots in the Tri-Cities

Not your average cuppa joe

Is there anything in the world cozier than Sunday brunch? Or anything more delightful than waking up and starting your day off with several rounds of coffee (feel free to sub in the word “mimosa” here) and diving into a comforting spread of eggs, bacon or pancakes—whatever delicious, carb-laden meal that comes to mind when you think of breakfast? It’s hard to beat, but we’re confident we can take it up a notch.

Though classic greasy spoon breakfasts are a thing of beauty in and of themselves, sometimes we find ourselves searching for more. A staple like French toast is delicious, no doubt, but what would you say instead to a caramel French toast with brulé-ed bananas and Chantilly cream on top? Or instead of a bacon eggs benny, a brunch charcuterie board?

For both adventurers and traditionalists alike, here are a few brunch cafés in the Tri-Cities serving up breakfasts with a creative twist.

According to Hard Bean Brunch Co, “Brunch isn’t just a time…it’s a feeling.” You’ve got that right. Waffle crusted wings, breakfast mac and cheese and tiramisu waffles are all items that can be found on this café’s innovative brunch menu.. For those seeking vegan and gluten free options, Hard Bean has separate plant-based and gluten-wise menus that are no less enticing to choose from.

This small, laid back restaurant in Coquitlam offers brunch “with a touch of Asian influence.” Traditional breakfast items are interspersed with gems like kimchi ham eggs benedict and bulgogi beef breakfast burrito. Be sure to check out their lunch menu too, especially their pizzas which range in flavour from pepperoni to sweet potato mousse and pineapple shrimp!

Address: 2120 Austin Ave, Coquitlam

Whether you’re looking for a rich, meat-heavy breakfast plate or simply a good scone, Morning Tide Eatery is the ideal breakfast spot for so many different reasons. Options like brisket hash, butter-poached scallop benny and crispy pork belly immediately catch our attention. Their baked goods and lighter plant-based fare, like their ube scone and cold brew smoothie, also sound just as delicious.

Address: 228 Schoolhouse St #8, Coquitlam

The menu at Brisk Cafe is unlike anything we’ve seen before, offering kalepache, a rich and meaty Persian breakfast soup, alongside other Middle-Eastern staples like dizi (lamb neck served with potatoes, beans and chickpea stew), halim (a hearty stew with shredded meat) and a “persian breakfast dish” consisting of eggs, sheep’s milk cheese and Iranian flatbread. They have lots of dessert options too, for anyone who simply wants a treat to enjoy with coffee.

Address: 1190 Pinetree Way #111, Coquitlam

On & Off is a fairly new addition to the Coquitlam food scene as a classy, late night dinner spot that makes for the perfect date night. They also happen to have a killer brunch menu, too. How about a melted brie and wine poached bosc pear to start, followed by a “cloud” scrambled egg croissant sandwich? Got more of a sweet tooth? We’d highly recommend the strawberry pancakes, served with salted caramel pecans and strawberry crème fraiche.
