Saku is home to Coquitlam's finest pork cutlet
Crispy, juicy and oh so saucy
Opening in Coquitlam just last May, Saku has taken over the Tri-Cities by storm with one single, irresistible menu item: the Japanese-style Tonkatsu pork cutlet.
If you’re a weary traveler, die-hard foodie or a Coquitlam resident searching for a warm and comforting meal (one that practically sings to you at the end of a long work day) it can’t get any better than this: a deep-fried pork cutlet sliced into delicate bite-sized pieces, a hot bed of rice and a handful of crispy shredded cabbage to balance out all the richness.
We couldn’t resist ordering the Rosu Katsu, the most classic option on Saku’s menu. The deep-fried breaded pork cutlet was perfectly tender, encased in a golden, crunchy breading that left us in awe. The flavours were perfectly balanced and with every bite, we found ourselves transported to the bustling streets of Tokyo.
We didn’t stop there of course—with such a diverse and colourful menu, who would?!—and ordered ourselves the Ebi Hotate Katsu, a basket of deep-fried scallops and prawns. The freshness and quality of the seafood truly shone through, making us crave more even after our plates were wiped clean.
Some other notable menu items include chicken katsu, nabe (deep-fried pork loin mixed with egg, onion and mushroom), udon noodles and veggie katsu, all served on their own or with a serving of homemade curry meant to be poured over for an extra layer of richness and comfort.
Nestled in the heart of Vancouver since 2019, we couldn’t be more thrilled to have a new Saku location here in Coquitlam. If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Japan or a meal that emphasizes comfort (considering, especially, that colder weather is right around the corner), we can’t think of a better place to put on your foodie bucket list.
