Port Moody's Rewind Beer Co. officially opens September 16

Rewind Beer Co. has experimental beer, deep dish pizza, and a healthy dose of nostalgia

Step aside ’50s diners and $5 milkshakes—there’s a new nostalgia-inducing spot in town.

Rewind Beer Co. opens its doors this Friday, and we were fortunate enough to get a tour from Parkside’s (and now Rewind’s) marketing manager Travis McLean to take a peek into the soon-to-be-opened spot.

He told us in an interview that the throwback theme allows both Rewind’s design and brewing teams to flex their creative muscles.

“It's bright, it's fun, it allows us to stand out a bit on the row, which is always tough,” he said.

“[The theme] is just a wealth of stuff to draw from.”

Rewind Beer Co. is a sister brewery to the much-beloved Parkside, which sits just a few doors down from Rewind on Port Moody’s famous (infamous?) Brewer’s Row, and while the two breweries may have similar upbringings, Rewind expects to be that eclectic younger sibling that Parkside never knew it needed.

“We’re conscious of the fact that our taplist doesn’t rotate enough at Parkside,” said McLean, noting that there are nearly half a dozen beers that have become mainstays at the brewery—and on the BC Liquor Distribution Branch’s order lists, resulting in limited room for experimental batches.

But that’s where Rewind comes in.

“We want it so that every time you come [to Rewind], it’s going to be a little different; you're going to have a different tap list, there's going to be different posters on the wall, you're going to be listening to different eras of music.”

While the dedication to smaller batch beers will see a wide variety of limited beers come and go at Rewind over the coming months (and years), McLean touched on two beers that will kick things off for the Brewery: Laser Lite Lager and a rotating fruit series called Rainbow Road.

"We want a large list of beers that we rotate constantly, so we've got a lot of tanks and a smaller brewhouse,” he said.

And just as the beers may be a little more out there compared to Parkside, so too are the sights of Rewind once you step through the doors. Our personal favourite bit of decor were the hot pink chairs (all lovingly hand painted a stunningly bright shade) as well as the wide range of Rewind branded hats that are all limited editions, with only 24 to 48 of each ever being made.

Throw in the rotating movie posters, the In Session signs that light up when someone’s in the washroom, the coolest tap heads we’ve personally ever seen, and All. The. Neon. and you’ve got a setting straight out of John Hughes’ most inspirational dreams.

What’s sure to be another big draw for the brewery is the deep dish pizza it offers alongside the taplist.

Inspired by Pizza Port in the US, Rewind will offer Hightop Pizza made in-house, and McLean says that they’re considering doing delivery down the line—meaning you could be able to get both pizza and beer in a single order.

The food list will be bolstered by ’80s-style snacks like Bagel Bites and breadsticks, which will pair perfectly with the era-specific movies and music videos that will constantly play on Rewind’s four TVs.

Rewind Beer Co. opens Friday, Sept. 16 at noon, and can be found at 2809 Murray St. in Port Moody.
