Spotlight: The Henderson Place Mall food court
Korean hot dogs, dosas, hand pulled noodles and everything in between
Sometimes you don’t have to go very far to travel the world. Sometimes it’s right there, waiting for you at the edge of a street corner, or at the end of a long shopping trip when you feel an urgent growl in your stomach.
We’re talking about the Henderson Place Mall food court, which holds a glorious compilation of independent Chinese, Korean and Indian food stalls preparing some of the tastiest and highly rated meals in the Tri-Cities. You can find everything—from dosas to Taiwanese sausage fried rice—all in the same place! If you’re looking for date ideas, a food stall crawl through Henderson Place would no doubt make for a deliciously fun outing.
Join us as we take you through some of our favourite spots in this beloved Coquitlam shopping centre:
If you’re craving some classic Korean street food staples like toppoki, kimbop and fish cake soup, Tokki will transport you directly to those streets (and beyond). It has a colourful selection of items to choose from, including vegetarian and vegan options like deep fried seaweed rolls filled with japchae (clear sweet potato noodles), curry udon and cheesy kimbop.

This iconic Burnaby eatery just recently opened up a new location inside Henderson Mall (hallelujah!), serving its famous tofu soup in all of its glorious variations—beef, pork, kimchi, mushroom—along with several other Korean entrées. Regular stops at the House of Tofu Soup food stall are guaranteed to chase those winter blues away, one spicy broth at a time.

You can find both Northern and Southern Chinese food at Walee’s Bistro, with the menu consisting of various types of dumpling, noodle and wonton dishes smothered in rich sauces and broths. The restaurant allows you to choose your spice level, too, from zero to extra spicy, which is a great feature for those of us who simply can’t handle (or absolutely live for!) the heat.

Arirang Hot Dog is the best place to go for Korean-style hot dogs (for those of you who are unfamiliar, they’re like pogos but way better), with sausages wrapped in a crispy rice dough and jazzed up with fun fillings like mozzarella, potatoes, squid ink and pretzels. If you’re looking for a plain dog between two buns it has got that too, and it’s no less enticing than the rest.

Desi Dosa Madras is arguably one of the best spots in the Tri-Cities to get dosas, which come in every flavour you can possibly imagine: onion potato, spinach paneer, butter chicken, prawn and so many more. You can find a list of curries and briyani here too, with equal numbers of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

Noodles and rice are the name of the game at Kuai Wei Jia, topped with succulent meats like Taiwanese sausage, lamb and braised beef brisket. Other items include gyozas, egg rolls and deep fried squid—all of which, together or on their own, would make a delicious and moderately priced meal. Be sure to try their spicy beef noodle soup, as it’s one of the most popular items on the menu.

Kashgar Uyghur Cuisine offers a fascinating fusion of Middle Eastern and Chinese cuisine, and serves some of the most unique dishes in the food court (and really, in all of the Tri-Cities). Think hand-pulled noodles and braised lamb served over naan, along with many Uyghur specialties like polo (a rice pilaf consisting of veggies and lamb slow cooked in oil), and samsa (a savoury, flakey meat pie).

This Chinese/Cantonese food court stall serves generous portions of noodle and meat fishes like tan tan noodles, seafood udon and deep fried pork chops (as if pork chops couldn’t get any better!) Expect spicy broths and silky, creamy sauces in each meal, not to mention some of the plumpest dumplings we’ve ever seen.
