Where to find the flakiest croissants in the Tri-Cities

It doesn't get any better than laminated butter.

A soft and flaky croissant is the pinnacle of all pastries.

Though there are thousands of incredible baked goods out there, none are as luxurious and sophisticated as the croissant au beurre; and it takes a truly experienced baker to make a good one. The laminated pastry dough, folded and shaped multiple times over the course of several hours (and up to a few days!) requires a meticulous kind of love. The end result? A crispy, shattering crust, impossibly soft and puffy interior, and the unmistakable taste of butter.

In other words, perfection.

Here are some of the best croissants you can find in the Tri-Cities, encompassing all the beautiful textures and flavours we can only hope to experience in every pastry.

The viennoiseries at Elmo Baking Co. are made up of 33 layers of pastry dough, and take over 72 hours to make. Created with high quality Canadian butter, their pastries are exemplary in both flavour and texture. They also carry some incredible flavours and croissant fillings, such as pistachio cherry, ube, and black sesame.

According to Cafe Dorothy, providing an authentic cafe experience is an art—one that requires passion and love, ultimately manifesting in every product. Their cakes and croissants certainly deliver on that promise, as quality and love can be felt in every bite. We’d highly recommend their almond croissant and ham and cheese croissant sandwich (because why on earth would you want a regular ham and cheese sandwich when you can enjoy one on a croissant?!)

Opening their doors in Port Moody just last year, Pourquoi Pas has since developed a cult following. Specializing in artisan French-inspired pastries and quality coffee, their croissants (as well as all of their laminated pastries) taste just as good as they look. Whether you go for the humble butter croissant to the cardamom pistachio swirl bun, there are no wrong answers.

Olivier’s La Boulangerie is the champion of all French bakery classics, serving freshly baked breads, layered cakes and savoury lunch items that can transport you to a Parisian cafe in every bite. Their croissants come in all the familiar classic flavours like chocolate, almond, plain, and ham and cheese. All are delightfully flakey, buttery, and crisped to perfection.

The concept at BjornBar Bakery is homestyle baking with a sophisticated edge, or “elevated nostalgic baking” Some of their specialties include dessert bars (which come in every flavour you can imagine, from lemon meringue to spumoni) and fine pastries. Their croissants, both classic and double baked, certainly live up to the bakery’s main promise: “everything fresh, everything made in-house, everything chock-full of butter and love!”
