A Q&A With Amelie’s Cakehaus

Just in time for the cozy fall season

Nothing says fall quite like some baked goods fresh out of the oven.

We connected with Amelie Janzen of Amelie’s Cakehaus to talk about her recent shift to a commercial kitchen, what it has meant for her local business, and how our readers can get their hands on some of her delicious creations.

When did you start your business?

Five years ago I started my custom cakes business, Amelie's Cakehaus, out of my home kitchen. Today, I am excited to be operating out of a commercial kitchen. The move has been amazing and timely, but also a little nerve-racking. With a one-year-old at home and a husband who is also self-employed, change needs to be approached strategically.

Where can people order your products?

People can place an order by messaging me directly through the Amelie's Cakehaus Facebook page. Soon, they'll also be able to find me at local farmers and artisanal markets, cafes, and small boutique retailers. I'll provide updates on when and where on Instagram and Facebook.

Where are you operating out of?

My commercial kitchen is on Spring Street in Port Moody. The space is perfect for baking and decorating cakes and pastries. It also offers a space for me to connect with my customers in person by hosting cake tastings and meetings to discuss their vision for their orders (by appointment). Eventually, I also plan to open a small retail front at the kitchen so customers can drop by to say hello and enjoy a freshly baked treat.

Are you looking to collaborate with other businesses?

I would love to collaborate with other businesses! I will be working with a local doughnut startup that is launching soon. Recently, we had a lot of fun creating some doughnuts for Yellow Dog Brewing. I used their beers as the inspiration for the flavours and actually mixed them directly into the fillings and glazes. It's amazing to see what passionate and creative businesses can do when they work together!
